Ever wonder how a song gets written? If not, see ya. If so, let me tell you about "Sunday Morning".
Most Sundays, the alluring Ms. Puppy Luv and I wander down to the Old San Juan Starbucks for coffee and a couple of hours with the New York Times. It's our weekly routine and we both enjoy it.
One Sunday, I noticed a fellow sitting at a table. He appeared to be a tourist just off of one of the cruise ships. What struck me was the way he was just staring blankly across the table. It was almost as if he were seeing someone there. Who? I thought.
What came to me was that this guy was all alone on his cruise. I imagined that he and his wife had bought tickets, but she'd passed away just a few months ago and now he was traveling for the first time without her.
I put the two things together: Sunday morning routine plus the recent loss of a loved one and I had the theme for "Sunday Morning".
For the music, I had a drum loop to which I added birds singing and water flowing and some classical music in the background. It's supposed to give the ambiance of a nice home with a woods out back.
So, now you know the secret. How long did it take to write? About an hour for the lyrics, the same for the music - and another sixty years to become sensitive to the sadness that comes with loss of a loved one.
